Let me start this post by saying that we are a Lego family. With 3 boys in the household – my 2 sons and my one husband, our floor used to be covered with Lego pieces when they were little (the kids, not the husband). Later, a home-made Lego table was the mainstay in the living room, also covered with Lego pieces, and at one time, Lego train tracks, until the kids decided to use the train and tracks as launching pad for Lego people…
We love Legos. We are not embarrassed to admit that we still play with Legos ourselves. We don’t make fun of people who love Legos, or trains for that matter. Yada yada yada. You get the drift.
Then I saw this today on Amazon.com (or as one of my good friends calls them, The Evil Empire…)
I was utterly disturbed.
Is this a joke? Is it Photoshopped? Is it me? Doesn’t that seem like a parallel to “Could you come and help me look for my puppy?”
I showed it to my 11 year-old, and the first thing he said was, “Wow. I have no life. I play with Lego all day!”
Then he went back to his Mindstorms. (Yeah. I love me some good irony too…)
Has the marketing department at Lego lost their marbles? Or, in this case, their blocks?
Much to my embarrassment and relief, google is once again my friend, and I found the truth behind the
The Special 50th Anniversary Edition Lego!
My bad… The guy? He is the owner of the Lego company Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen (yeah, no kidding. Try and say that name 3 times…) aka Lego founder’s grandson who appeared as a kid on the original Town Plan box and now returns on this 50th anniversary special edition!
Somehow I suspect that he does indeed “have no life” because he’s too busy running a global company and thinking up ways to reinvent Lego year after year, and that he does “play with Lego all day”.
The rest of us are just jealous.
To redeem myself from the over-rampant cynicism, I shall seek solace in this oldie but goodie:
At first, I was overcome by weird creepy feelings about the picture on the front of the box… until you explained it. And now that I know it was for the 50th anniversary, I feel a bit better… but I still can’t help think it would have been less creepy had they used a kid instead. Or incorporated dude’s picture in some other way. I’m sorry, it’s still just weird-looking to me!
Oh, we LOVE Legos around here. Granted, my little guy is still way too little to play with them, but my husband has an enormous container full of them under the bed from when he was a kid… just waiting to be played with by our son!
I know, I’m being a total comment hog and I’m sorry!!! But what is the name of that movie? It’s on the tip of my tongue, but I’m having a massive brain fart and can’t remember!!

Don’t worry about being a comment hog here. I am guilty of that too. 🙂 Thank you for confirming my first impression when I saw the box! Just be careful about Lego pieces: a friend of ours whose families are all Lego fans as well said that his niece has been taken to the emergency room for swallowing Lego pieces for a couple of times. Afterwards, they just sort of got used to it and decided to “wait it out” (if you know what I mean…) when it happened again.
@ Jane
That was one of my favorite scenes from any move as well. Always make me smile.
@ ModernMom
Aww. Thanks!
So it is NOT just me then. Good. I was feeling quite guilty for thinking the owner of the Lego group is a perv… LOL.
Ha ha! Glad you went on to explain! I thought it was weird to see Mr DressUps double on the front of that box.
Love that you all play Lego…a family that plays together stays together…and all that jazz!
Thanks so much for stopping by my blog. I’m loving yours!

I love this post. At first, I was with you – an odd photo for a children’s toy. And then you explained – and then ended with one of my favorite movie scenes. We all need to take time out to play. My 6yr. old claims he’s too old for his Thomas Train set (the wooden track/trains – we must have thousands of dollars invested) but every time I start building a track he’s got to join me. Every time. May he never “grow up.”
